Halloween 2011!

RING THE BELL:

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News report the castle-like Grand Army of the Republic Hall was recently bought from the city for $200,000 by brothers Tom and David Carleton and their partner Sean Emery. Cleanup at what’s known as the GAR Building was to start immediately.

They plan to reopen the building in 2013 after a $2 million to $3 million renovation. They’ll move their media production business there. A restaurant and retail space also is planned. Some space is expected to be dedicated to a memorial to Civil War veterans.

Built in 1899 as a meeting hall for Union Army veterans, it was used later for other purposes before closing more than 30 years ago.
